CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich., Sept. 30, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair joined Human Development Fund (HDF) and local volunteers in September to pack Welcome Home Kits for Houston families recently released from Immigration detention. The kits went to more than 75 families representing approximately 450 people.

The initiative began with Al-Shaair, who brought the idea to HDF. Many of the people who were detained are their families’ primary earners, and the kits were designed to cover everyday household needs as families settle back in at home.

Each kit included cleaning supplies such as bleach, multipurpose cleaner, deodorizing cleanser, laundry detergent, and dish soap, along with personal care items including shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and maxi pads. Families also received toilet paper, trash bags, and dryer sheets.

Al-Shaair packed boxes and worked alongside volunteers throughout the day. HDF partnered with local community organizations to identify the families receiving support and delivered the kits directly to families the following morning.

“Look around. We could all be doing anything with our time. I know I have a game on Sunday, and I left work late today to come out here. But everybody in this room made a conscious choice to come out and help people in need, because in the eyes of [God], we are all equal,” Al-Shaair said.

For Al-Shaair, Houston is one part of a larger commitment. His work with HDF has taken him to communities in Jamaica and Jordan, and the Welcome Home Kits brought that same commitment to serving his neighbors back to his own city.
